Types of Fabrics for Swimwear

Swimwear fabrics come in a wide variety with different compositions. However, they can mostly be categorized into two main types: nylon and polyester.

1. Nylon
Nylon is a popular choice for swimwear due to its excellent stretch and recovery properties. It is lightweight, durable, and resistant to damage from chlorine and saltwater. Nylon fabrics also offer good colorfastness, making them suitable for vibrant and long-lasting swimwear designs.

2. Polyester
Polyester is another common fabric used in swimwear manufacturing. It is known for its strength and resistance to stretching, shrinking, and wrinkling. Polyester fabrics are less breathable than nylon but offer superior resistance to fading and abrasion. They are often blended with other fibers to enhance the overall performance and comfort of the swimwear.

Printing of swimsuit patterns

Digital printing, especially sublimation printing, provides a straightforward and relatively cost-effective solution for swimwear fabrics. In digital printing, there are two main options: heat transfer sublimation and direct-to-garment (DTG) printing. While DTG is suitable for nylon, the high minimum order quantity often poses financial challenges for most swimwear startups. On the other hand, heat transfer sublimation printing can be achieved with very low minimum order quantities, offering excellent quality and long-lasting colors. The only requirement is that it must be printed on polyester fibers. We recommend a minimum blend of 60% polyester in mixed fabrics to achieve vibrant and durable colors. The higher the polyester content, the better.

From a technical perspective, no swimwear manufacturer can achieve sublimation on nylon fabrics! Using polyester-based fabrics for heat transfer sublimation printing in swimwear is one of the most successful digital printing methods in the fashion industry. Polyester fibers, known for their durability, combined with sublimation printing, can withstand intense sunlight, harsh chemicals in the water, and years of wear and tear.
