How do you find the best swimwear manufacturers?

Google is a great place to start your research. However, I recommend that you start your search with brands, not suppliers. Try to find small emerging brands and then contact them and ask if they would mind sharing their suppliers. Many brands will say no. But some will share suppliers with you, and of course Runni is the brand that supplies many countries, so take some time to get to know us!

Things to remember when you find a supplier!

Local holidays

Where you produce determines your development and production schedule. In India, we have to be careful during the monsoon - basically, everything slows down during that time. In China, there is the Lunar New Year, and the country usually shuts down for a full month in January or February - in some cases, factories will cut off development and orders as early as October before the Chinese New Year.

Each country has quirks you need to adjust to - be sure to start planning for them early.

Nylon vs. Polyester

The biggest question you need to ask yourself when it comes to swimming is - are you going to use polyester or nylon? Polyester will be cheaper, but nylon tends to be stronger. For a new brand, this is a tough decision. Save some money to invest in marketing, sales, etc. Or, go for the best quality right out of the gate.
Only you can answer that decision.

Request an in-house fabric

Ask the manufacturer if they have any special in-house fabrics. Some manufacturers will develop their own line of custom fabrics specifically for their customers.
Often, Runni will develop their own fabrics to help customers with their problems. So, if we notice that many of our customers have issues with colorfast, we may use special colorfast fabrics. Or, we may have used super-stretch fabrics to provide additional comfort.
If you've noticed a problem in the industry, chances are we already know and are working on a solution, just ask the question!

Be honest about minimum order quantities - minimum order quantities

Be realistic and honest with your factory. If you approach a factory and tell them you will make 100 of a style and then try to order 10 of each style - they may refuse and turn you down. Or, if they agree to do so, they will charge you more like crazy, eating up all your profit margin.
Worst case scenario is that they reject your order and you need to start the whole process of finding new suppliers, developing prototypes, etc. all over again. This is a huge waste of time, money and resources.

So, please be honest

There are small suppliers who will work with you, and you don't have to lie about your projected orders to try to entice them to work with you. When you work with people who really want to work with you, they tend to give you a higher priority (rather than leaving your emails and messages unread) and want to do a good job to help you grow your business together.

Ask to see samples

Never order anything without seeing a sample first.
I repeat, do not submit a bulk order until you see a sample you like. This means fabric, fit, color, labels, tags, everything is perfect.

Are they ethical?

What does the factory really look like? Are employees paid fairly? If you can (I know the pandemic is making this difficult), try visiting them and getting a feel for the work culture.

Are they sustainable?

What other sustainable work do they do besides using recycled plastic swimsuit fabric? Do they use clean energy? Do they filter and recycle water? How do they dispose of textile waste? Do they upgrade in some way?

It goes deeper than fabrics. For example, can you get labels made from recycled paper, or make masks, headbands or other small accessories from factory waste?
